ABOUT

Cross-cultural perspectives in literary event management is an inaugural study tour bringing together Australia-based RMIT University students from writing, publishing and editing, communication and public relations disciplines, giving students first-hand experience of cultural event management through nine days of induction and work placement at the Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) in January 2017.

Cross-cultural literacy is further enabled by a briefing by Kolkata Literary Festival (KLF) staff on location, and pre-work the Melbourne Writers Festival. The project will help students build cultural literacy and awareness about India, as well as knowledge and skills involved in large-scale cultural events – the JLF’s footfall attendance was 300,000 over five days in 2016 – an increasingly important part in creative economies.

Students will improve creative and technical skills and learn about project and stakeholder management via the JLF intensive. By travelling to culturally distinct locations within India, these students will build experience and knowledge of the diverse culture of different parts of India, West Bengal and Rajasthan, which have distinct histories and socio-political environments.
